Scarredstar had a lot to do.
He'd handled leaderly duties, reprimanded a kit on the edge of the camp, silently observed his Clan, and now, if nothing happened, the rest of the day was free. At least, of predetermined activities. Little Miragepaw had been terribly neglected since he'd become leader, as he'd been struggling to pick up the ruins of a Clan that suffered terrible losses, and had too little warriors for its apprentices. It was time he paid attention to his own apprentice.
"Miragepaw," he called into the apprentice den, and turned around, padding towards the edge of the camp. His mind was far from easy, but it was time to set his worries as leader aside for a moment and focus on his apprentice.
He continued past the edge of the camp, knowing Miragepaw would follow. His apprentice was shy, but had grand potential. He cared for his apprentice as much as he could care for any cat besides his sister. It was almost fatherly. The young, feminine-looking tom was the best apprentice one could have, in his humble opinion, and he was proud to teach him all he knew.
He opened his jaws and tasted the air. "What do you scent, Miragepaw?" he mewed, then closed his one eye and focused on the air. He could hear the scuttles of various forest prey, taste their scents. It was vital that they got good catches today. The fresh-kill pile was running low.

Miragepaw was hiding out in the apprentice den, avoiding everyone as usual. As long as no one came looking for him he would be safe right? He already went out this morning and caught two mice, trying to keep his distance from the patrols and fellow apprentices. Ever since his mentor became leader a few other apprentices started trying to talk to him, even his brother was being a little nicer to him...It was all so different. Why did his mentor have to be leader? Why not Maplepaw's or well someone's other then him? 'It's like my mentor becomes leader and now I'm considered a celebrity?' he huffed thinking to himself, however he was interrupted by a familiar voice.
"Miragepaw,"
Obediently the smaller tom lifted himself up and shook off his short fur looking carefully around the den to make sure no one was planning on trying to talk to him. After exiting the den he trailed after his mentor about as close as he could in order to show that he was going training and no one should talk to him! Because he was being his usual shy anti-social self. Once they were out of camp Miragepaw relaxed and let himself drift a little further behind his mentor, glancing around the forest he loved. Before his mentor even spoke to him he was already closing his eyes and letting his nose guide him. The forest smelled of New-leaf and fresh rain, he wasn't paying much to prey scents.
"What do you scent, Miragepaw?"
A little distracted Mirage lifted his head to look at his one eyed mentor, he was never bothered by it honestly...actually it only made him look tougher, and worthy of his position since after all everyone knew how he protected the clan at the expense of his mentor and his eye...The idea of losing his mentor to a fox made him flinch 'I wouldn't be strong enough to save him...' he thought however his mentor was a leader and would have a second chance....well actually...eight more. He had nearly forgotten what his mentor said and blinked "Huh...wait....oh...scent...I..." he closed his mouth and inwardly scolded himself. 'I'm so stupid...how does he put up with me...' He closed his eyes and sighed. Remembering what he scented a few moments ago. "I can smell it rained....and.." he paused flicking his ear and scented a little mouse. It must of been scurrying away since the scent was growing fainter..."And a mouse...but it ran away...might of heard us coming....Sorry Scarredstar...." he said dropping his head down to look at the dirt. He sighed and kicked the somewhat moist dirt and let his tail drop, it had to be his fault, his brother was right...he couldn't do anything... Scarredstar could tell his apprentice was distracted. He too had noticed the interest in Miragepaw that had appeared since he became leader. He couldn't help but feel bad for the tom: he was reclusive as well. The interest in him caused by leadership was brought on himself, but Miragepaw didn't ask for the popularity.
He flicked his tail, turning to look at the apprentice. "Very good," he meowed. He noted his apprentice's lowered tail and ashamed face. "Miragepaw, you lack faith in yourself."
He stood over his apprentice, tall and strong, but his one eye was gentle. "You have abilities beyond what your peers tell you. You are smart and able. Those who wish to break you down are those that envy you the most." He touched his tail to the small tom's shoulder, then looked back towards the forest. "Now. Let's catch some prey, since your fellow apprentices don't seem interested in feeding the Clan."
He slunk, silent, through the undergrowth. There were so many opportunities for prey around them. It didn't take long before he found the mouse that Miragepaw identified earlier. He lunged forward, silent, like a lion upon an antelope, and swiftly caught and killed it. He set it aside, burying it shallowly to come back for later, then turned and watched Miragepaw. "Now for you." His good eye seemed to be laughing. "Show me what you can do."

"Very good, Miragepaw, you lack faith in yourself.
The words made him both feel good and feel bad at the same time. He honestly didn't have much faith in himself, She-cats reduced him to pitiful stutters and his brother was stronger and far better then he was.
"You have abilities beyond what your peers tell you. You are smart and able. Those who wish to break you down are those that envy you the most."
Miragepaw blinked as he was touched by his mentor's tail, looking back up at him he nodded. 'Okay...at least...he has faith in me...' he thought and quickly flicked his ear. "Thank you Scarredstar," he said softly and watched his mentor turn. Peering around him Miragepaw wondered what he was looking at, nothing was his best guess probably just thinking about prey, of course he was right...
"Now. Let's catch some prey, since your fellow apprentices don't seem interested in feeding the Clan."
With a nod Miragepaw watched as his mentor started to stalk his prey, in order to not screw anything up Miragepaw sat there and watched, as his mentor vanished, Miragepaw slowly followed letting his stomach press against the moist dirt. He felt it clinging to his short fur and flicked his ears. A bird was chirping nearby, however Miragepaw didn't feel brave enough to go after one...if he messed up Scarredstar might take back what he said before. The sound of a gentle squeal made Miragepaw jolt up, it was Scarredstar with his first kill. So fast...how could Miragepaw ever compare? And to make matters worse that was the same mouse he scented before. 'He is so skilled...how am i supposed to catch something that fast...' he thought to himself and flinched as his mentor spoke.
"Now for you. Show me what you can do."
Oh no! it was his turn now...Taking a deep breath the small apprentice nodded and looked around, where should he start? Closing his eyes he took in a breath of fresh air, many scents entered his nose. There was the faint smell of a mouse, and a robin, and the freshest scent was probably several fox-lengths away. Dropping down once more he crawled carefully across the wet dirt, eyes fluttering open to notice he was heading toward a thorny bush, great it was hiding...So maybe that one wasn't a good idea...But it was the closest thing he could scent! He had to do it! Looking at the bush carefully he saw there was a smaller cat sized hole he could fit through, and hopefully pounce the creature inside. His eyes never left the bush and soon the small mouse could be seen chewing on a seed, he or she looked content and happy, safe from any harm as it ate it's meal. Miragepaw paused his stalking for a moment to watch it, and feel which way the breeze was moving.
The wind hardly blew on his fur at all so he couldn't quite tell, maybe he should just give up and tell Scarredstar he was a hopeless apprentice? No! Scarredstar just told him he was good! He could do this! With this new found confidence the small tom moved toward the creature and when he was close enough to the bush he pulled back on his haunches and sprung at the hole, claws unsheathed. If he missed there would be thorns in his nose and everywhere on his body, hopefully he would be lucky. A sudden jolt of pain traveled up his face as a thorn scratched through his fur but he could fell the small furry creature in his paws as he landed. Quickly he bent down and gave it a bite for the kill, however this motion mat more thorns stab his back and face. A whine escaped him as he pulled back from his kill and felt even more thorns stick into his fur. "Ouch! Why did it have to choose a thorn bush! Ouch!" he spat as he then picked up the mouse and tried to back out. The thorns scraped along his back, however once he was released he sighed with relief and looked for his mentor. He made it out alive and the scratches would heal easily on their own...Hopefully Scarredstar would be more impressed then humored by his catch...but any normal cat would laugh if they watched his little scene...at least he caught the darn mouse.

The wind had stilled, and Scarredstar watched as Miragepaw dropped into well-formed, silent hunting crouch. He studied the apprentice's form, approving of his movement, but he was startled to realize Miragepaw was slinking towards a thorn bush. Was he crazy? Surely he wasn't...
But he did. He lunged forward straight into the bush. He caught the mouse, backing out of the bush, but he was predictably covered in sharp thorns. "Ouch! Why did it have to choose a thorn bush! Ouch!"
He walked over to his apprentice. "Good job," he said, "you are a good hunter. But sometimes some prey is better left uncaught."
He turned, about to go further into the forest, but froze when a tragically familiar scent touched his nose. The wind had changed. There was a fox, just upwind...
It was though his body had turned to stone. All he could remember was bloodshed. The pain in his face. The terrible, desperate scream of Mottledfoot as the fox ripped his throat open, blood falling onto the dirt like heavy rain. The agony as claws ripped into his face. The even worse suffering when he realized Mottledfoot was dying right beside him, trying to protect him from the fox's sharp claws. He could remember going into a terrible rage, clawing and biting until the ginger creature moved no more. His good eye widened.
He hadn't seen a fox since that tragic day. His claws sunk into the moist ground.
He heard Miragepaw behind him and whipped around, snarling, fur bristling. But he caught himself and slowly relaxed, sides heaving, eyes haunted. He was torn between turning around and hunting down the disgusting fox, or walk away and hunt in a different area with Miragepaw. He couldn't in good conscience leave a fox in the territory, but he didn't want Miragepaw to suffer what he had to suffer as an apprentice.

Shaking out his fur he smiled innocently at the Leader and dropped the mouse brushing the dirt over it to save for later. 'There, now i just have to remember it..' He then turned back to look at his mentor who seemed to be smiling However he was never sure if his mentor was smiling or not. His mentor then walked over to him and Miragepaw suddenly got nervous.
"Good job, you are a good hunter. But sometimes some prey is better left uncaught."
Miragepaw's skin grew hot and he looked back to the ground "Thank you Scarredstar, and I know...i just...wanted to catch something..." he said softly. A thorn was still in his fur but he could get it out later, wouldn't be that hard right? As they started walking he once again took in the scents around him and noticed a odd scent. What in Starclan is that smell?! His mentor must of been thinking the same thing cause he seemed to freeze causing Miragepaw to nearly bump into his mentors back leg.
Miragepaw missed him but his mentor whipped around so fast it made Miragepaw have to hold his breath to keep from screaming. Green eyes stared in shock at his mentor, he looked so fierce and terrifying to Miragepaw. "S...Scar...Scarredstar..." he paused as his mentor relaxed a bit. "What's wrong?" Miragepaw wasn't sure if he should run away or just stand there like an Mousebrain. He chose the second option and just stared at his mentor confused.
The tom never scented Fox before, so he had no idea that it was the same creature that could take out such a strong apprentice's eye.

i'm always in this twilight the stars, the moon, they've all been blown out [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,10,true][atrb=style,background-image: url('http://i53.tinypic.com/wb98wn.jpg');,true] ROLLING IN THE DEEP !
Scarredstar felt a shudder go through his striped fur, a chill sink into his bones. He remembered asking the same question, having the same curiosity, as an apprentice. Every breath, every word, every pawstep...it was as if it'd just happened.
"Mottledfoot...what is that acrid scent?"
A brief pause to taste the air. "...That's a fox, Eaglepaw. Let's step carefully now and investigate...a fox on our territory is not good."
"Okay..."
Rustling through bushes, an angry snarl, flash of ginger-red fur...
He closed his eye, letting out the breath he was holding in one long sigh. It was time to confront what'd caused him suffering for so long, that changed everything. One battle, one wound, one life...since then, life had been more...significant to him. He understood the softness of it, how quickly it could be lost, like trying to hunt moths. He mustn't let his past guide him now. He had an apprentice of his own, who needed him to be strong. Just like Mottledfoot.
"Come," he said, after he'd had a moment to calm himself. "What you're scenting is fox." He carefully slunk through the undergrowth, senses ranging out, trying to keep himself concealed even as he sought the creature out. Always, he had one ear turned towards his apprentice. If the worst should happen, he at least had eight chances to win...Miragepaw was not so lucky.
The undergrowth cleared almost abruptly into a very small clearing. He froze just beyond its edge. There, towards the center, lay a rich red creature with a long, doglike muzzle, black paws and nose, and a white tail tip. When he'd fought the fox as an apprentice, he never really saw it clearly, only the startling hue of its pelt. He'd picked tufts of that ginger fur from his claws afterwards. But now, standing just out of sight, downwind of the creature, he could study it clearly. It was an older fox, with tired dark eyes and a shaking in its limbs that reminded him of Pebblestep, a very old tom he'd cared for as an apprentice. It was nothing like the fearsome creature that'd taken his mentor's life.
He sighed, silently, and turned back to look at his apprentice. "Take note of its scent. A fox on Clan territory is simply asking for disaster."

Miragepaw sat silently and watched his mentor. He seemed deep in thought and he wasn't sure if it had to do with the gross smell that was entering his nose and mouth. He was curious but wouldn't state that since he knew a saying that elders often said 'curiosity killed the kit' and he was no kit...not anymore anyway. He was nearly old enough to be a warrior honestly, only a few more moons hopefully he would become one and then be able to feel maybe a little more confidence...right? 'Ugh i hope no one expects me to talk to them when i become warrior... ' he sighed and flicked his tail, nearly forgetting all about the strange smell until his thoughts were interrupted by his mentors voice.
"Come, What you're scenting is fox."
Miragepaw looked at his mentor with shock, wait they were going towards the fox? What!? He knew they were bad and all and could kill a cat, why not go to camp and tell the leader to send a patrol out and get it...oh wait his mentor was leader now. Miragepaw was frozen for a moment and he took a deep breath. "Oh.....Okay Scarredstar...You know best..." he said softly and followed his mentor obediently ears flicking and eyes darting about. 'What if it ambushes us!? What if Scarredstar dies!? What if i die!!!?' the younger tom was growing more and more nervous, he was tempted to just bolt away from the area! However he knew he needed to be brave, his clan would be in danger if he ran...as would Scarredstar.
His mentor stopped in front of him and Miragepaw took another deep breath, pressing his body to the forest floor he crawled carefully to be next to Scarredstar and looked at the Red creature. It looked almost cat-like however at the same time it looked like a dog. What kind of a cross-breed was it! It looked old...however Miragepaw had no idea how to tell the age of a fox, after all this was the first time he saw a creature like it. Glancing up at his mentor he looked at his face for any sign of feat, and could find none. He was either amazingly braze, and confident or just masking it with a trained facial expression.
"Take note of its scent. A fox on Clan territory is simply asking for disaster."
Miragepaw nodded and looked back to the red creature, What was his mentor planning? Surely he didn't think that Miragepaw could possibly fight such a creature, he had hardly mastered fighting in general! Maybe they would head back to camp....however if they left the fox it could get deeper into their territory and possibly make it into camp and cause more trouble then necessary... "Scarredstar, what do we do now?" he whispered gently up at his mentor, while he stayed in a low crouched position.

i'm always in this twilight the stars, the moon, they've all been blown out [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,10,true][atrb=style,background-image: url('http://i53.tinypic.com/wb98wn.jpg');,true] ROLLING IN THE DEEP !
The mood seemed to lift. He could see the muted terror in Miragepaw's eyes. He must think he was meant to fight the fox! He turned, comfortable with turning his back on the fox though he kept his senses alert, and said, "Don't worry. I will go out with my senior warriors and handle the problem. You won't have to worry about fighting foxes yet." And I hope you never will...
It'd been his concern since he'd gotten his apprentice. The small tom, though smarter than he thought himself to be, was not strong enough to overpower a fox. It worried him that perhaps he would endanger his apprentice. But he'd decided from an early point that Miragepaw was his responsibility, and if he would have to follow the pawsteps of Mottledfoot straight to StarClan in order to protect him, he would.
The thought was surprising. He rarely cared for any cat beyond a clinical friendliness. However, this small, feminine tomcat had won his heart in a fatherly sense. He was as important to him as his sister Littlewhisker now, something he would have considered blasphemous a few moons before. But now, the transition was as easy as water over pebbles.
He stood, shaking a stray bit of moss from his fur, and guided Miragepaw out away from the clearing. They'd barely gotten a few foxlengths away when a flutter of feathers could be heard overhead, and a ghostly shape swept down and landed on a branch above them.
It was an owl. Scarredstar stared at it briefly, then recognition dawned over his clawed face. "Aster!" he meowed. "It's good to see you!"
The owl peered down at them, head tilting comically to the side until it was parallel to the ground. "Is that you, ah, Eaglepaw? Goodness, you have gotten quites large, yes! And what's happeneded to your faces?"
"It's Scarredstar now," Scarredstar corrected fondly. "I was attacked by a fox."
"Is that why I saweded ah, Mottledfuut, yes, borne out into my woodses? To be, ah...buried, I think it is. You funny cats."
"Yes," he responded, his good eye darkening with pain, but the emotion rapidly flickered from his face and he turned to Miragepaw. "Aster, this is Miragepaw, my apprentice. Miragepaw, this is Aster, a friend of mine from my apprenticeship. He is a barn owl that occupies some of our territory."
Aster flipped his head back to its original orientation, squinting his dark eyes in pleasure. "Hellos, Miragahpaw!" He raised a single tawny wing in a salute of sorts, and tapped a talon on the branch: an owl's form of greeting. "Glaux be with you on yours training. Your mentors is the bestes you could haves. Great cat, Scarrededstars is. Great cat indeeds."

The idea of fighting a fox made Miragepaw's stomach tighten. Even if it was older he still didn't want to mess with anything that looked so...evil...
"Don't worry. I will go out with my senior warriors and handle the problem. You won't have to worry about fighting foxes yet."
A breath of relief escaped Miragepaw and he let his tight muscles loosen as he relaxed into a sitting position. 'Thank StarClan!...Wait he said yet...' The idea of fighting a fox in the future hardly sounded any better! Why was he such a small weakling, he had no right to become a warrior and Scarredstar would have to train him until Miragepaw became an elder! The idea made Miragepaw sigh and paw at the dirt.
His mentor then led him away from the clearing and before he knew it there was the sound of wings flapping making the younger tom look up. An owl? At this time of day? What!? Turning to say something to his mentor he was shocked to hear that he was talking to the thing? Wait! He knew him? What!?!? Miragepaw was confused and stared blankly at his mentor.
They had talked about Scarredstar's face and Miragepaw blinked, he had forgotten that it was a fox that did that to his face...how could he forget such a thing? Shaking his fur he looked back to the bird and looked at it carefully, how did they know each other? Since when did owls talk? He was so confused!
"Aster, this is Miragepaw, my apprentice. Miragepaw, this is Aster, a friend of mine from my apprenticeship. He is a barn owl that occupies some of our territory."
Miragepaw blinked when he was addressed and looked at his mentor. He was going to ask more questions however the Owl spoke to him, however Miragepaw was having trouble understanding him. What on earth was he saying?! Something about Scarredstar being a great cat....and such. Miragepaw stared at the bird in both awe and confusion. "Scarredstar...he talks...weird..." he said softly to his mentor, getting a little nervous. Owls could swoop up kits and take them away, he wasn't sure if he could trust one.

Amusement flashed in Scarredstar's one blue eye. "Miragepaw, all animals speak in their own animal-language. Aster, like some before him, has learned catspeak."
"Owlses are nots very good at catssspeak words, as y-cahn telh," Aster said. "Beakeks ares not madeses for those noise-ahs. But we cans hears!" He gestured with one long, frighteningly sharp talon towards the side of his head, where his ear slit was hidden under his head feathers. "Does nawt do weelz to attempt insul-teeng an owhl under your breafh."
Scarredstar shook his head, halfway between embarrassed and amused. Aster, however, seemed to have no such qualms and was making an interesting noise deep in his throat, a rolling, almost purring sort of chirping sound: a churr, an owl's form of laughter.
For a moment, it was rather casual. However, Scarredstar remembered what he'd just encountered, forgotten in the thrill of meeting old friends. "Aster," Scarredstar requested politely. "If I could ask a favour -"
"Anythings, Scarrededstarz." Aster's voice was emphatic. Though his words didn't translate well through his beak to catspeak, and his beak caused a whistling accent to his words, his emotions conveyed themselves almost startlingly well. It was slightly eerie, how two animals sworn to be territorial enemies could be so alike, so...normal. So capable of friendships and honesty and good will. Scarredstar could only hope that Miragepaw would learn this: though enemies waited around every corner, friends came from unlikely places.
"Thank you, Aster. I assure you this will be extremely helpful to us. We appear to have a fox on our territory. I was planning to come and fix the problem later, but, as owls are better with foxes than cats..."
Though the reason was accurate, factually speaking, Scarredstar's words felt oddly hollow. Something understanding flashed in the owl's black, black eyes. "Surelies. Fox good preyz....pelts good nest-beddeing...meat iz good mealeh." He fluttered his mottled feathers. "But befores I go, Scarrededstarz...."
In the moments following that simple clause, the emotion in the dusky forest almost transformed. Suddenly it felt colder, like a kit in the snow realizing just how icy it was when the high of excitement wore down. Anticipation pounded through Scarredstar's limbs though he wasn't sure what he was waiting for, what was so special. Above their heads, Aster swelled to almost twice his size, feathers fluffed out, and lowered his head, the black gaze in his ghostly face ominous. He formed a long, tear-shaped silhouette, with long long legs barbed with deadly talons, slightly raised wings, and a lowered, eerily white face. He opened his beak, and a shallow hissing sound escaped him.
"Beware, the cat named on the wing of the night bird."
It was the first sentence Scarredstar had ever heard Aster speak that wasn't jumbled or hard to understand. The words were stressed in odd places, and his accent was thicker over them, a whistling screech through his words....like he'd spent much time ensuring that the words came out precisely, entirely right. But before Scarredstar could think any deeper of it, Aster lifted off the branch in a silent whirl of white and tawny and flew off, in the direction of the clearing in which the pair had found the fox. The one-eyed tom watched him go, puzzled.
Well, he has always been a little strange.
He decided that the warning could best be interpreted later, when he wasn't in the middle of a hunting lesson. He flicked Miragepaw with his tail lightly, and started off through the undergrowth again. Already, they'd been out longer than he'd anticipated, but he still had other things to cover with his apprentice before they returned to camp with their kills.
"Miragepaw, have you ever caught a bird?"

Miragepaw let his tail curl around his paws as he sat, green eyes full of curiosity however he was a bit scared of the bird. The answer his Mentor told him made the tom nod he had not thought of that, after all he had never heard any other animal attempt speaking like a cat...He was about to just agree before the bird spoke again.
"Does nawt do weelz to attempt insul-teeng an owhl under your breafh."
With a blink he looked at the bird. Boy birds must be easily insulted, all Miragepaw did was make and obvious statement. The owl talked funny and that was that but Miragepaw wouldn't press on. Looking from his mentor to the owl he didn't want to talk, since apparently birds were easily insulted and he would want to be it's dinner. He was about to wander off to maybe catch a mouse when he heard something about the fox they had just seen.
"Surelies. Fox good preyz....pelts good nest-beddeing...meat iz good mealeh."
This made miragepaw shudder, prey? A fox? Bedding? A fox? He wanted to just leave now, this bird gave him the heebie jeebies! So before he could try to start a conversation with miragepaw he decided to crawl away and find a mouse or something. Lifting his nose he could taste the scent of his mentor and that owl, however the scent of mouse was strong, it must not have heard them there or scent them after all the were a bit downwind. Glancing at his mentor he figured he wouldn't be missed for a little bit right?
Turning around he crouched low to escape them and followed the scent of mouse toward a nearby tree. Flicking his ears forward he listened for the mouse, once he could hear him munching on a seed Miragepaw licked his lips. Taking a light step forward he avoided the few twigs that littered the forest floor. Ears nor folding back as he leaned back, eyes targeting the content mouse. Springing forward he put out his paws claws ready to clasp the small prey. Once he landed on the squealing creature he parted his jaws and bit into the warm mouse. He had forgotten how hungry he was but he would live, even if the taste was to die for.
Scarredstar must not have notice he left, since he was already starting off when he turned to go back. Sprinting to catch up with his mentor he had not yet buried his prey. As his mentor slowed he mentally thanked StarClan and brushed dirt aside with his paw dropping the mouse in the small hole.
"Miragepaw, have you ever caught a bird?"
His ears flicked toward his mentor and he blinked. Birds? That sounded hard, they flew unlike cats and would be much faster then little mice! "No...Are you sure I am good enough yet...?" Miragepaw was afraid to disappoint his mentor, he had never caught a bird and he was not so sure if he could catch one.
[OOC: Eventualy he will be an amazing bird hunter that is how he gained his name on other sites...Miragefeather...Also at dads so i don't have my table and don't feel like getting it...from previous posts....laaaazzzy me!!!]

Scarredstar watched his apprentice with some interest. "I think you're ready to learn." He turned around, heading further into the forest, guiding Miragepaw through the undergrowth. He spotted a ruddy-chested robin, cleaning its beak on a branch high in a pine tree, and glanced back at Miragepaw.
"Now, I don't expect you to know how to do this right away. However, it's best for you to observe. It is a good skill to know in our forest environment."
He slunk towards the tree, focusing on keeping himself unseen amongst the pine needles surrounding the trunk. The bird, believing itself safe in the cradle of the branches, paid him no mind, not a care in the world, and continued its cheerful song, head tilted towards the heavens. Such a beautiful voice was a shame to snuff out, but this was for a good cause. It was time to teach Miragepaw the most useful hunting ability when living in the forest. He prepared himself, stiffening his muscles, then, with extreme agility, raced up the tree. His claws ripped through the bark as he went up, sending tiny hunks of it flying down to the pine needles scattered below. He shimmied his body up the trunk with the ease of familiarity, and was soon upon the branch where the robin perched.
The bird whipped around, chirping loudly in alarm, spreading its wings to lift off, but Scarredstar threw himself forward and launched off a smaller branch. It looked as though he would miss the bird, as it'd gotten away off the branch, but he strained his claws out and snagged it. The little bird was pulled down by the wing, and before it could recover and fly away, Scarredstar pinned it to the branch with his claws and swiftly ended its life. He then picked up the bird and leapt down from branch to branch to return to the ground.
He dug a shallow hole and covered the red-breasted thrush with the upturned dirt. Breathing slightly heavier than usual, he turned to the small tabby tom who'd been watching with diligence. A single reddish feather still hung about his mouth.
"You have the muscles for good climbing, Miragepaw. Though you may not be able to leap up like that now, you can certainly learn. I have high hopes for you."
Scarredstar swiped a paw over his clawed muzzle, dislodging the feather and gesturing with his tail for Miragepaw to follow him. He decided it would be good for Miragepaw to work on his climbing skills, and searched for a tree good for a young apprentice to practice on.
He walked over past the tree he'd just climbed, choosing one with more supple bark that would be more susceptible to the claws of an apprentice. The branches grew fairly close to the ground. Experimentally, he sunk his claws into the bark; the abnormally long claws sliced through the wood like an owl's talons in a mouse. Perfect. He withdrew his claws and sat down, turning to look at his apprentice.
"Here. Let's see how high up you can get. Don't worry about your strength yet, it gets better with practice."
He settled more comfortably in the leaves, watching every movement of Miragepaw's with scrutinizing diligence.

Staring at his mentor he began to grow more nervous. He was not sure how great he would be at hunting birds, nor was he sure about what his mentor would think! Once Scarredstar began to move Miragepaw followed after him and crouched low as he began to show him what to do. Already he was unsure if he could ever do it, his mentor made it look so easy rushing up the tree, and nabbing the bird, to Miragepaw it was flawless! He stared with awe and felt his skin grow hot with embarrassment how could he ever compare?
"You have the muscles for good climbing, Miragepaw. Though you may not be able to leap up like that now, you can certainly learn. I have high hopes for you."
Looking carefully at his mentor the compliment was hardly noticeable he was too focused on the fact that he might never be able to catch a bird, he would never be made a warrior! There was no hope!!! He stared at his mentor as he started to move, and trailed after him slowly, tail dropping as he caught up with his mentor.
"Here. Let's see how high up you can get. Don't worry about your strength yet, it gets better with practice."
Staring at the tree in front of him Miragepaw took a deep breath, it didn't look too bad but it still scared the small amount of confidence he had left out of him. Eyes glancing up and down he judged the branches, deciding which looked better then the others and how fast he should go, getting up would be the easy part, going down would be a challenge. Closing his eyes he nodded to his mentor, afraid to speak since the only sound he would make would be a pitiful scared squeak.
Miragepaw moved to the base of the tree his eyes wandering back up it and down. 'Here goes nothing!' he thought to himself and shifted back and with a solid push he sunk his claws into the trunk and launched himself up further next his hind-legs would push and he was up nearly four branches within moments. Leaping up once more he continued up the tree, his claws scraping and pushing him further up. It actually wasn't as hard as he thought it would be, until the point where he made it nearly halfway to the top and started to feel tired, but should he stop? He wasn't sure, pausing he landed on a thick branch halfway up the tree and glanced town, his stomach doing a somersault. 'Its fine! I will live...just....stay still...' He thought to himself and moved a slight bit closer to the middle of the tree, a slight bit frozen.

Scarredstar studied the small striped tom as he eyed the tree fearfully, but as he figured, once Miragepaw started climbing, he was shimmying up the tree with great speed. The mangled cat, though knowing his apprentice was capable, was still startled at how fast he climbed and how high up he got on just his first try.
He finally stopped near the middle of the tree, and once he looked down, terror flashed in his eyes. This was always the hardest part: getting down once you got up. Scarredstar stood, moving until he stood just below the tree, craning his neck up to look at Miragepaw.
"Now, to get down, just go backwards. Feel with your feet first to ensure you have good footing."
It was difficult to trust one's hind feet enough to not have to look behind oneself with every step. Though with branches this close together, Miragepaw could just jump down from branch to branch until he reached the ground, but it was best to learn how to shimmy his way down the tree first. It was best to keep from adapting bad habits.
Scarredstar climbed up the tree with ease, settling a few branches below Miragepaw, in order to better watch his progress. Though the small tom had very little faith in himself, he was truly exceeding beyond Scarredstar's expectations for an apprentice his age. In fact, it wasn't too far off to think that he would be becoming a warrior quite soon.
Once he did, he would be a valuable warrior within the Clan. It was time Miragepaw got the respect he deserved: as an obedient apprentice, an able hunter, and a brilliant future warrior.
