Dovekit licks her paw carefully, making sure not one scrap of mud was left on her soft snow white fur. She sits in the nursery watching the warriors sharing meals and the elders gossiping in the corner. She wraps her small plumed tail around her fragile paws and rests her head. She watches the apprentices play and wishes she was one of them. “I’m so alone… No one wants to play with an orphan…” she thinks unhappily. She remember her mothers warm eyes as she looked at Dovekit and her sister with pride. Then Darkkit and her mother died. She remembers her fathers hallow eyes, never seeming to have life in them. “Was I not good enough? Why did my family desert me?” Dovekit shakes herself and mutters, “stop feeling sorry for yourself.”
She gets up and pads out into the frosty air and weak winter sun. Blinking at the sunlight she wanders over to the food pile and pulls of a small bird. She glances around and spots some warriors. She waddles over, heaving the small bird along with her, and sits close enough to eavesdrop. She watches the warriors sharing tongues and talking happily. Dovekit watches the camp from her seat in the shade of a fern.

Ottermask was sitting near enough to the group of warriors for it to seem like she was a part of their conversation. Slowly eating through her thrush, she was about to take another bite, when her yellow gaze spotted the ivory kit trotting over with her own bird. Sighing she had to smile a little watching the small kit with the bird. Nodding a greeting to Dovekit she finished off her thrush, standing up as she walked towards the kit and sitting near her. "Hello Dovekit, how are you?" she asks doing her best to be social. She knows what it feels like to be the outsider, to be the one others do not normally speak of. Yet as an orphan she could not imagine growing up without a loved one. She and the kit were more alike than they probably realized.
Licking a paw she ran it over her dark chocolate head, grooming herself as she examined the kit, ensuring she was getting enough food and whatever else a kit requires. While she was not a queen she longed to be one, to have kits of her own and a mate, one to look up to her and for her to watch grow with the same pride her own had watched her.

Dovekit looks up from eating and watches Ottermask before replying. “Hello… I’m doing good…” Dovekit hesitates, not wanting to talk anymore, “how are you?” Dovekit eats the last of her bird, and then sighs still deep in her thoughts. She looks at Ottermask thinking, “She looks a lot like my momma did…” Dovekit sighs sadly again. She picks up what is left of her bird and drags the remains away, to bury them.
Dovekit comes back and sits down under the lady ferns, next to where the warriors are. She glances at Ottermask, hoping she doesn’t notice, and then looks away. Pricking her ears so she can listen to their conversation, she hears little snatches of their day. She watches with longing the apprentices and their apparent friendship. “Would they accept me that way?”
She looks at Ottermask and the other cats as the get up to go about their days. “They must have fun! Why am I always alone...? Maybe… I could try… to talk to someone… No they probably think I’m a nuisance. Just keep to myself.” She gets up and runs to the center of the clearing where an unattended moss ball lay. She hooked it up with her claws, checking to make sure no one was watching, and then started to play by herself passing it away and running after it.

The chocolate hued she-cat watched the kit, she was better at taking care of herself than many of the warriors and apprentices. "I am good, thank you," she said about to try and say more when the kit scampered off to bury her kill. Watching her she looked back to the nursery wishing she could slide into there, but no. She would find that tom eventually, a cat to love her and have kits with. Purring at the thought she licked her chest a few times trying to calm herself, hoping none of her clanmates had seen her day dreaming. Soft yellow gaze followed the kit as she began playing with a ball of moss, normally the kits played this with another, yet it seemed she usually played alone. Ottermask had never had to play alone so she did not understand the feeling, but she would have hated to see her own kit playing by itself.
Rising she walked towards Dovekit pausing just outside her game area, "Would you like a playmate?" she asked wondering how the kit would respond. She usually played alone, Ottermask had noticed, like all the cats that the apprentices did not pay her much attention. Gently she flicked the ball back to the kit as it rolled near her, far enough to make the kit run for it and build some muscle, but close enough so she was not running over the whole camp. Licking a paw she ran it over her ear again, the she-cat was rather concerned with her appearance, glancing subconsciously around at the other cats with their multihued pelts and even the beautiful ivory cats like Dovekit and the other solids, anything but brown. She felt like she was the color of mud.

Dovekit pauses looking shocked that someone would even ask that. She looks at Ottermask for signs of mockery. Then as Ottermask tosses the moss ball Dovekit nods, trying to hide her happiness, and scampers after it. She quickly flings it back, watching too see if Ottermask will catch it. Dovekit thinks bitterly about why others avoid her, “I’m an orphan… There is awkwardness in that… most of them can’t understand what it’s like to have the unsavable be chosen in front of you; always last… that’s what I am.”
“Thanks…” Dovekit says trying to express the happiness at being chosen to be played with instead of one of the apprentices. To Dovekit being payed attention to is a rare occasion and it is one that should be not ignored, but it is hard for her to be affectionate to anyone… not after being deserted by her family. “Maybe she could be my mentor,” Dovekit thinks hopefully, She squashes the thought immediately. ” why would she want to do that…? Who is going to mentor me? It’s only a few more moons till I’m an apprentice…” Dovekit ponders that while playing with Ottermask. Catching and throwing the moss ball is easy at first, but Dovekit is getting a bit tired. She is determined to impress Ottermask though so she keeps going without complaint.

Otermask began to bat the moss ball back and forth to the kit. The warrior could not help but smile as the kit finally broke a smile and began showing true happy emotions. She hardly saw anything from the kit, no one did. It was little to nothing for her to bat the ball to and from, but the kit woud have to run for it. Exercising the muscles she had, in ways it was good practice for her before she became an apprentice. She was able to witness what potential the kit had, and a smile broke across her own muzzle again. It was good to see her acting like a kit. "Why don't you try eating with the other apprentices? Learn from them, I am sure they would show you the hunting crouch if you asked," she said not trying to deter the kit, but only aiming to steer her towards her future denmates, "You will be sharing a den with them soon enough," she said.
The chocolate hued she-cat was impressed by the kit's stamina, as a kit she would have been passed out by now. "Are you excited to become an apprentice?" the warrior asked the ivory kit. Eyes the color of a waxed moon watched her curiously, she would not mind having the kit as her own first apprentice. Dovekit was determined, a big part of being an apprentice, she would be hard working, she could see that. The simple chocolate hued she-cat looked around, the clan needed more kits, more cats to become warriors.

RAGGEDCLAWSCould it be any clearer? Black mist shrouded him as he slept, undisturbed by anything until the sound of two cats made his ears turn. Suddenly the gargantuan ebony tom’s golden eyes flicked open and slowly turned toward Ottermask and Dovekit. Dovekit was an orphan like he had been, wasn’t she? Or at least that is what he had heard. She didn’t feel she fit in for that reason; in other words, she needed to find strength. Raggedclaws had done that on his own: he had used tooth and claw to gain respect, to be feared, and he had made his own way through life. Twitching his dark nose, he shoved himself up and dragged his feet over to the small kit, who was playing moss ball with Ottermask. Suddenly Raggedclaws was looming over Dovekit, the scar over the entire left side of his face parted the fur and made him look mean. But he wasn’t mean, he simply looked down at Dovekit, taking in her appearance. She was young, and had a long way to go, but she had a name. At least she wasn’t like him. “Toughen up,” he said bluntly. “You’re not the only cat who’s had it hard. I was born without knowing my parents. I rose myself without a name in a brutal area, where the first rule was survival. Be thankful you know who you are right now, because neither me or Horizon had a past worth looking back at.” Muttering inaudible words as he turned, he slumped back down on the earth lazily and let out a long sigh.

Dovekit stopped in her tracks, looking at Raggedclaw suspiciously. She bares her lip at first, flattening her ears, she stares at him, opening her mouth to speak as he walks away.
“It would be easier that way.” She says anger flashing in her eyes, “It would have been better not to know them, better not to know what you have to lose.” She glances at Horizonshine. “You have her… If you lost her you’d be devastated,” Dovekit’s tail is lashing back and forth now, “I have no one, no one to understand me. My sister died because of me. My mother died because of me. My father didn’t care enough about me to live. I was deserted” Dovekit’s voice cracks as she speaks of her mother and sister. “I don’t care what you think.” Dovekit lashes her tail back and forth, then collapses in a tired heap on the ground. She watches Raggedclaws and Ottermask, hoping neither of them will be mad or be sympathetic, “I don’t need sympathy…” she thinks harshly and bitterly.
She picks herself up, her stomach turning bitterly with anger, and pads over to the forgotten moss ball. She picks it up in her mouth and walks to Ottermask, placing it at her feet.

RAGGEDCLAWSRaggedclaws wouldn’t have been sympathetic when Dovekit blurted out her entire past. To be honest, whatever she had experienced, it was none of his concern. His golden eyes stared at her, unimpressed, as she showed aggression toward him. He could squash her like an ant and be done with her within a heartbeat, but even so, if she was an Apprentice, he would have batted her to the floor. However, he did not hurt kits, so he wasn’t going to do anything about it. He had stopped when she had started speaking, his claws kneading the ground with the most bored expression imaginable. Well, Raggedclaws was never entertained. No cat could beat him in battle that he knew, and it was tedious. “...Are you done?” Raggedclaws muttered blankly, staring at Dovekit like she was in the way. He wasn’t interested in her life history, nor her attitude. He couldn’t fight her so there was nothing he wanted from her. “You have nobody to understand you because you don’t let them talk to you. How are others meant to understand you if you don’t even let them know what you like, or what you don’t?” The massive tom growled, swinging his tail around to knock against one of the dens. He moved back over to Dovekit and narrowed his eyes, letting his huge muscles bunch as he sat down. “And I didn’t tell you what I thought. I told you to get your act together and get over it, because no matter how much you dwell on it, it’ll change nothing. Make some friends, shut up and grow up.”

Ottermask flicked an ear, hearing the large tom lumber over towards them. She had said nothing, hoping he was moving to the fresh-kill pile instead. As he came closer, she had remained still listening to him. However the she-cat rose, hackles bristling as he laid back down, his back to them. "Back off Raggedclaws, she is just a kit," she hissed, hackles rising along her spine, "She will come into her own soon enough, she does not need you breathing down her throat," she growled, not wanting to provoke him, yet just because he was one of the most feared cats in the clan did not mean he could push them all around. Few would tell him that, she knew he could beat her, kill her in a moment. She did not want any new scars today.
Turning back to Dovekit she looked down at the moss ball, "All done playing?" she asked making sure before she tossed the ball again. Hopefully Icestar would have more sense than to give Raggedstar an apprentice. The last thing the clan needed was to have him training any cats to be as ruthless as he. She did not feel like mentioning Raggedclaws again, especially if he had traumatized the kit further than she was. Looking up she knew eventually she should go hunting or do another border patrol, but she only wanted to relax for the day. However that was not the warrior code. It was not a way of life for her.

Dovekit looked at him in rage. “Only if you do first.” She walked away flicking her tail back and forth. She claws the ground as she walks and goes straight past everyone she sees, straight out of camp and into the forest. She sat down a little ways away from camp, letting herself cool off. She stares at her paws, knowing she shouldn’t have said that, knowing she should apologize. ”But he doesn’t know what it’s like to be hated by your family, to be told by your own father that he wished you had died instead.”
Dovekit sat in the forest and wailed. “This is all your fault Darkkit! Why did you leave me? Why did you leave me, with… with this mess of a life!?” She screams to the forest and the near by birds. She sat there wishing she had been killed instead, wishing that her father hadn’t killed himself in front of her, wishing he had loved her enough to live. “Why does everything good leave?” Dovekit asks herself sadly, “Why did I live? It should have been me taken instead… I should have saved her…”
Dovekit gets up and walks back to camp, hoping no one heard her scream, like a kit.

RAGGEDCLAWSHearing Ottermask talk to him like that made Raggedclaws’s muscles tense more than usual and he swung his head around to see the tiny Havana Brown she-cat and narrow his eyes. What, was she insane? Did she know how strong Raggedclaws was, or how much he “obeyed” the Warrior Code? Flicking the tip of his tail, he sized up the she-cat. There was no way she’d hold an attack and live afterwards. She was nowhere near as strong. Growling viciously, the tom’s paw whipped up to slam into the she-cat’s face. If it connected, it would send her ploughing into one of the dens, which would leave a cat-sized hole where she hit. No way would he be clearing that up later, anyway. Snorting, he remembered how easy it had been to kill Cody – the ginger cat with green eyes who had been the ‘champion’ of his city. Well, he died in one hit, being shoved into a fence- and then a wailing sound tore through his ears and he lifted his head, growling darkly. Dovekit had left camp. Stupid, stupid kit!“Shut up, Ottermask,” he snarled, storming over to the small white kit as she returned to camp. “You stupid kit,” hissed Raggedclaws furiously, “You’re not allowed to leave camp! Go to the Nursery and help Horizon change her bedding.” It was an order; if the kit refused, Raggedclaws would personally drag the kit in there, flailing and kicking if it chose to, and make it help the queens.

Ottermask watched as Raggedclaws rose, he was [i[huge [/i]. He could flatten nearly any cat, flicking her tail she turned, looking towards the entrance as Dovekit left. She had removed her attention from Raggedclaws, about to move to retrieve the kit before she was scooped up by an owl or worse found by another warrior. As her muscles readied for the cat to move she felt something heavier smack into her. It felt as though the weight of a tiger had slammed into her body, and in particularly her head. And then she was flying, towards the apprentice wall, slamming into it. The cat had little idea what happened to her, she remained stunned for several moments if not a minute or two in the hole. Slowly she pulled herself from the hole, unsteady on her paws as she turned to see the large dent and rock chips along the side of the boulder that was the apprentice den. Nearly falling over again on her paws the she-cat felt as though her mind were swimming. Looking at the rock she noticed a few spots of blood, assuming it was her own. "Are you insane? You could have killed me! No wonder no she-cat truly wants you," she growled before collapsing with exhaustion beside the apprentices den assuming her wounds would coagulate on their own. She did not wish to bother the medicine cat with her troubles. They had bigger things to worry about. Trying to calm her breathing she just remained grateful she could feel all of her paws, and move everything necessary.[/center]

Once inside she glances around spotting Horizonshine. She opens her mouth, compressing her anger at the brute of a cat Raggedclaws, “it would do no good to take it out on Horizonshine…” she thinks bitterly, “I am here to change your bedding… Do you know where to get good bedding?” She waits watching Horizonshine with suspicious hazel eyes. Her whole body is quivering and she is trying not to cry like a stupid kit. Hearing a noise outside Dovekit runs out watching as Ottermask flings into the wall of the apprentice den.
“No!” Dovekit, forgetting about the new bedding for Horizon, runs to Ottermask hoping she is still alive. Dovekit presses her nose into Ottermask’s fur. When she gets up Dovekit sighs with relief. She stares at Raggedclaws, horror in her eyes. “I’m sorry, I don’t want you to get hurt… You’re the only one who ever tried to talk to me… What compelled you? I have no idea… who would want to be friends with a puny, stupid kit like me? I’m sorry,” she murmurs to Ottermask. She lays down next to Ottermask, hoping that she isn’t too hurt.

Lightningfoot padded into camp, prey in her mouth. She glanced at the scene before her, then dropped it quickly and raced over to Ottermask. Then without thinking, she scolded her. “Why did you taunt or insult Raggedclaws?” She scolded. “It probably serves you right.” Then she looked sorry. “Sorry.” She said. “It kind of just slipped out.” She looked at Raggedclaws, pushing herself up and padded over to him. “What did she say?” She said, quietly gazing into Raggedclaw’s eyes.
A mixture of emotions swirled in her eyes. Was it fear? Just a touch. A little bit of….pride? Admiration circled around the middle. And there, in the middle, was pure trust for the strong tom that trusted her. She smiled thoughtfully, then turned and pulled Dovekit away. “We need a few cats here right now to fix this wall.”
She quickly took over the scene. “Get as many cats as you can to help.” She instructed. “Ottermask, get yourself to the medicine cat, even if you don’t want to. I don’t want to have to knock you out and drag you over there.” She quickly raced out of camp, and came back with twigs and stones in her mouth. She tossed some to Raggedclaws, and quickly began fixing the apprentice’s den.
