Her ears found the crashing of the waves on the rocks soothing to her nerves. She didn’t fear drowning; she didn’t fear being swallowed by the rolling water. To her it looked as peaceful as ever and nothing could ever replace it. It was Sun-High and she was thinking of going hunting just off the shore. But with an alligator so close she wasn’t sure she wanted to hunt there. Maybe she’d hunt near the two-leg place. It always had something interesting for her to catch…
Jaypaw looked out at the water. It was peaceful! The roar of the water, why would she ever want to go back to Two-leg place to hunt! There were just too many surprises there anyway. And she had enough to last her a moon. Bottles being dropped suddenly, and breaking over her head, tripping over two-leg cans and such… it was just too much work. Flicking her tail she remembered how she had almost caught the rat before some two-leg thing came crashing down through the wooden beams. Her fur fluffed up as she remembered the uncomfortable jolt it had given her. Sighing focused on listening to the waves beat on the rocks below. Her blue eyes filled with awe at how blue the water was. ‘The warriors were right. Sometimes it is nice to just listen to waves beat on the rocks. It fills one with-’ Her thoughts were cut off as something rustled nearby. Her ears flicked back and she remained completely still. The sea grass was the only thing that made a sound. The long thin blades of grass rubbed against each other, sounding like crickets. Her eyes scanned the tall grass. She saw little bugs flitting up and down between the blades, and every now and then she would hear the chirp of a few crickets, and that was it.
Narrowing her eyes she cursed herself for not paying more attention to what was behind her. She could have let something slip by, a stray mouse or some other sea loving creature. Perhaps even a fox! Getting up she slid as quietly as possible into the fronds. Now was her time to go hunting. But she knew she would have to be fast! There was no room for error; the wind was blowing her scent towards the prey. She was grateful for the challenge! She just wished that StarClan would help her alone the way. Lifting her nose to the breeze she got a mouth full of salt water tang. Instead she put her nose to the ground, almost like a dog, and sniffed. When she picked up the scent of seagull she was excited, and began forming a plan of attack in her mind.
‘Okay… first you’ll… and then you’ll… no, wait… first you’ve got to find the bird! Then we can start thinking of a plan of attack!’ She decided. So following the scent she found the white bird; pecking at the ground in search of something. Getting into her best stalking position, which could have used a lot of work, she crept forward expecting to catch this bird and bring it back to camp…

Back to the sea again. Adderpaw breathed in deeply the cool scents of saltwater and only choked but once. She licked her wind-ruffled fur, rooting out the grime of the sand with a rough tongue. Quickly, she bathed herself before approaching the pulsating waters of the ocean. Her paws crushed the smooth sand, flicking up pieces of wet mud. She gathered together a pawful and watched as the water was siphoned out. Then she flung her bundle down and raced back to shore. There, she clambered over large masses of rocks as she headed back to camp. In truth, she was no fan of the sea, but it calmed her all the same. Perhaps because she could relinquish her anger towards the ocean instead of venting it on StarClan. Or perhaps because she knew that visiting the sea was one privilege not granted to her ancestors.
The tawny tabby reassured herself that the remainder of her fury with StarClan would dissipate once the patrol was started. Imagine – being part of a Warrior’s patrol! It had been many moons since she was last apart of one. She recalled the moment vividly. Her eyes had alit upon a scrumptious rat with beady eyes. Slowly, she began to stalk it before pouncing upon her quarry. With triumphant eyes gleaming, she returned it to camp, beaming all the while. It was a memory that evoked a smile upon her grim face. But then, that one stupid, mouse-brained tom had said…
Sudden frustration welled up inside her again. Of course! This was why she had been assigned to a patrol! Obviously, they did not think she was worthy enough of holding the position as Medicine cat apprentice. Well, she certainly was, and she could prove it! Adderpaw fumed beneath a monotone sky.
As she nearly cut her paws on a particularly jagged stone cleft, her nostrils drank in the scents of another apprentice. Swiveling on the tips of her paws, she saw a creamy bundle of fur perched on the edge of a cliff. Jaypaw! Swiftly, she threaded her way through clumps of sharp grass and bounded over stray rocks. Her pawsteps were silent as she padded forward. Her back was hunched, her belly low to the ground. Jaypaw, it seemed, copied her motions. The other she-cat too had lowered herself to the ground and began slinking forward. Puzzled, Adderpaw stuck her striped head above the waving strands of grass and saw a small feathered figure.
From just a few fox-lengths away, the Medicine cat apprentice watched Jaypaw stalk her prey. She did not interfere no matter how much she wanted to. She longed to sink her claws into the white bird to vent off her anger, to sharpen her hunting skills, to demonstrate her prowess, but she refrained. Her jade green eyes burned with the intensity of a good fight, her claws started itching, but still. Jaypaw, although a bit on touchy and sensitive side, was good-natured at heart really. Or at least, the two apprentices had never yet seriously quarreled. Emphasis on the yet.

Her mind flitted back to the night she had met Weedpaw, or rather attacked Weedpaw for trespassing and stealing prey from her clan. She was almost scared that would come across the scent, possibly stale by now, and ask questions. Iceclaw didn’t seem like one to mind, but she minded terribly. Crunch, crackle, crunch!! Jaypaw’s blue eyes widened at her mistake and snapped back to the present, from the past, to find that her prey was taking flight!!
In a panicked mess Jaypaw leapt for the bird, but her paws got caught in the fronds of which she was hunting and she tripped and fell flat. Wriggling, and in the mean time feeling this burning sensation in her paws, and the scent the blood, to get out of the fronds felt tears come to her eyes at the pain that was being inflicted on her paws. “Someone help mee!” She cried in pain. Sliding out all claws Jaypaw tried to cut herself loose but it only made the pain worse. Finally she stopped wriggling. She instead lay there trembling, allowing the pain in her hind paws to go down while she waited for someone to answer her call for help.
Would she ever be able to walk again with ease? Would she have to stay in the medicine cat’s den with Adderpaw all day? Not that she didn’t like Adderpaw, in fact she found Adderpaw quite the interesting company! Clumsy and a bit touchy, Jaypaw felt like she had known her for several moons, which she has, but it felt longer…
When the breeze picked up and rustled through the grass, she picked up Adderpaw’s scent. How long had she been there? How long was she going to stay there?! Hoping Adderpaw would help her she called out again, loudly, "Please, someone help me!!"

Distantly he gazed at Jaypaw, a piece of horse meat tangled in his jaws as he chomped down on it territorially. Horse meat was delicious, and there was no doubt about his craving for more food, even though he’d already eaten a fair amount that day. Understanding that the Cat-Apprentice was hunting, he settled down to watch in hopes that he would learn more about how the cats hunted, so perhaps he could use some of their techniques sometime. He did, however, doubt that they would be of much use to him, since he hunted fish and big prey such as horse and gazelle, while they sunk their tiny fangs into birds and mice. Such small prey would never sustain the Alligator.
As he watched, the Apprentice appeared to become distracted as she stalked the bird, and Elijah clambered up onto the land and lay idly in the bushes, observing it from a closer perspective. Carefully his tail curled under him slightly, and he blinked his evil-looking eyes as the Apprentice drew closer and closer. Suddenly the cat stepped on a branch, and the bird took off, with the cat in pursuit. However, in a clumsy display, the Apprentice tripped in the fronds and crashed to the floor, and Elijah darted out quickly, snatching the tiny bird-prey in his jaws. Silently he threw it down, into a tree where it rested, dead, and the Alligator turned back to where Jaypaw was writhing in an attempt to free herself. It didn’t appear to be getting her anywhere. Realising that the cat was in pain and frightened, he began to drag himself closer, and opened his mouth wide enough to fit the cat.
"Please, someone help me!"
Gently he clamped his razor sharp teeth around the Apprentice and slowly picked her up, using his tail to snap the fronds beneath him before he crawled away from the plants, hooking the bird up with one of his teeth and headed back out onto the beach. Any attempt the cat would have made to injure or to free herself would have failed – Elijah’s skin was way too tough for cats to split. Gently he lowered his head to lie on the sand, and opened his mouth fully to allow the cat to leave his grip.
“You are free now,” he said, in what sounded like he was growling. He couldn’t help his accent. “Take your bird and lie on the sand...”
Post Synopsis: Elijah has killed the bird and has pulled the Apprentice from the sand, and dragged them onto the beach. He is now waiting for Jaypaw to climb out of his mouth and lie on the sand, or to do something else. He is giving the bird to Jaypaw, and is not interested in devouring it.
