The trees looked gloomy and the shadows were long and dreary. It gave the place a kind of uncomfortable feel. White paws trod softly through the shadow, fog, and mist that closed behind them as if the paw steps had never disturbed the fog. The Ground was cold and hard; if you weren’t careful the fringed air could chill one to the bone, even the soul if it was cold enough. The sun never dappled through the trees to warm the ground; just cold hard, heartless moonlight. This was a place of sadness, but that was changing, very quickly, oh how it was changing. The very moonlight seemed to be as warm as the sun. And the creatures of the Dark Forest were more and more… friendly to the beings of the natural world. The supernatural world was the home of Shriekingvoice now; his calico pelt tingled with satisfaction as he thought of every detail of the Dark Forest. It had been that way for almost thirty moons, if he could remember right. The shadows felt as comforting as the warriors den in SoulClan on a cold leaf-bare night. He preferred them, he liked them. He liked them more than anything. Secrets were told in darkness and whispered about in the light. That was the way he saw it. But here the only light that filtered gloomily through the trees was the moon. His green eyes observed the grey of everything!
‘She is as beautiful as the moon and as radiant as the sun.’ Shriekingvoice thought to himself. Crawling out from under a tree root, and perched himself upon it. How I miss my lovely Morningbreeze.’ She was indeed beautiful. He sighed as he thought about her. It seemed his every thought was filled with something that reminded him of her, maybe it was the constant glow of the moon. Or even perhaps the night he realized he really did love her, despite what he had done. And she had no notion that he had been the one to kill her brother, Weaslepaw. No notion at all. Of course Shriekingvoice didn’t know that she had died, he had little connection with living until now. And try as he did, he didn’t find her in the SoulClan camp, and if she had born him kits he would never know. There wasn’t a single cat in SoulClan that looked remotely anything like him or his sweet Morningbreeze. ‘This is foolish. If she is dead, then there is no hope. She would be with StarClan instead of here with me.’ He thought for a moment of how gentle she was, and kind. ‘And look at me. I know what I have done, no cat needs to tell me or remind me.’ He thought, his eyes narrowed, he knew that if he was ever going to see his Morningbreeze again he would have to do more than cross the Great Barrier, which he would have gladly done at any moment now. But even though he tried he could never get across. Shriekingvoice glowered; she could never love him now. If she was dead then she knew he had killed her brother and how could she love someone that had done something like that?
Shriekingvoice leapt down to the forest floor. He knew he was doomed to walk around forever in the empty forest. There was nothing to do, no sleep, no rest, no food, only emptiness. His heart cold, Shriekingvoice stalked on through the forest just as he had always done. Memories flooded back to him of his first night in the forest. Dazed, confused, and a sudden feeling of loneliness… Of course over time he knew he was never alone. There were great legends in this forest, names he had long known and come to admire beyond anything. A satisfied smirk crawled onto his face as he walked. There was not a care in the world here, not one. The bitterness, the hate towards StarClan was all there. Normal, never unusual, his home.

Shadowgaze is playing with your emotions. "Shadowgaze is taunting you." Shadowgaze is plotting. "The mousebrains are blathering."
Shadowgaze wasn't tired, wasn't hungry, so had no excuse to get up and out of her den. Other than the fact that she now appeared to have dozed off in the middle of a clearing. She got up and sighed; her previously concealed den's shadows had shifted. Again. Shadowgaze's smile returned. She could always go looking for trouble. Some poor lost soul moaning and groaning about would be easy to mess with. But, she should probably avoid any apprentice training. Those apprentices almost always wanted blood on their claws, and Shadowgaze wished it not to be hers. Shadowgaze sniffed for any lone cats. She turned her head around as she tried. Group of cats, multiple ages...no. Probably an apprentice training...Aha! A lone cat. Now to mess with it.
Shadowgaze stretched her sleek spine, wincing a little as the corresponding head movements sent a painful prick through her scar. She let the blood flow into her eyes and then onto the blackened earth as red tears. Her eyes stung a bit from the blood, but she let it, taking the blood as a warning not to get too rough on the lone cat. Whoever it was would have a fight in them; they'd have to if they were in here. She opened her eyes, and blinked the blood away. She smeared it into the earth to hide her trace, though this would just end up being a shadow under a rock at the end of the hour. She unsheathed her claws as she always did after a bit of inactivity, and her eyelids lowered in concentration. Then, her deep black paw shot out, and Shadowgaze broke into a sprint.
Shadowgaze loved the feeling of the wind whipping past her face, the fact that she was just a black blur to the naked eye. It was like concealing herself in the shadows. No cat could see her until the run shattered into a tired walk. But in here, in the afterlife, nothing could halt her but herself. She ran until the cat's scent was overpowering her nose, and allowed herself to slow to a brisk walk.
She spotted the cat, who she now knew was a tom, lurking about with a dazed expression on his face. Oh boy, another straggler. Shadowgaze thought, sighing silently. He's either ancient and confused, or a newbie who thought he was good enough to get to StarClan. Either way, he's useless fox dung. But my paws still carry me forward... And indeed they did. Sure as the black sky above her, her jet-black paws padded forward, into the clearing, in full view of the cat. Shadowgaze quickly plotted an act. Cute and quiet.
"Um...he-hello?" Shadowgaze mumbled innocently. "I-I have no idea where I am...can you h-help me? I've been w-wandering for hours...I g-got lonely. And r-really c-cold. Will you be f-friends with m-me?" Shadowgaze shivered, her eyes pleading. She had tried to make herself as small as possible, and now looked about the size of a large apprentice. Her green eyes, pleading though they were, also had an added touch; a glaze of terror. That would make sure that this other cat would take the bait. Heh, who knows? Maybe this cat will teach me a few tricks. Heh heh heh...
The bait had been laid out...now to wait for the prey.

The tone made Shriekingvoice’s fur crawl, something was up. So he calmly turned his head and his eyes alighted on a black she-cat, "I-I have no idea where I am...can you h-help me? I've been w-wandering for hours...I g-got lonely. And r-really c-cold. Will you be f-friends with m-me?" First off, who was trying to play him for a sap, and second, who did this she-cat think she was? Maybe it was just him, but her words rang more than true, it was really cold, and you will wander for hours on end here. The smile he had carried was replaced quickly with a look of ‘sympathy’ and he replied in a soft accent filled voice, “Of course I’ll help you, my dear. Where are you trying to get to, StarClan, the great barrier?” He paused here to take a minute to take in the she-cat’s scent, “AshClan camp, perhaps?” He looked at the black she-cat more closely. The only feature he could catch was a scar that was on her forehead. It had obviously been freshly opened; he could smell the blood from where he was.
Shriekingvoice sneezed. The dust here was ridiculous! But back on topic… He didn’t like being played for a sap. What does this she-cat want? She has obviously been dead for a while. He, on the other paw, he had been dead for at least thirty moons and counting. But ever since he had gotten to this ‘place of no stars’ it was hard to tell if it was the day he died, or years after. It didn’t matter anyhow, all he knew is that she was dead and she wasn’t dreaming. How many cats had he come across that had tried to play him for a sap only to find out he wasn’t? Well, maybe this she-cat will get the picture faster than the others had. She looked smart enough. But we all know looks can be deceiving.
Shriekingvoice took this time to stretch his powerful limbs. He had a stub for a tail so when he sat down he couldn’t wrap his tail around his paws, but he could wait for a reply…

Shadowgaze is playing with your emotions. "Shadowgaze is taunting you." Shadowgaze is plotting. "The mousebrains are blathering." AshClan camp? Ooh, touchy subject. Shadowgaze pushed those thoughts far, far away from her mind, and focused on the current task. The sympathetic look Shadowgaze had gotten should have proved that her trick was working, but Shadowgaze saw through it, knowing that the other cat did not believe her and was probably offended. Darn...time to up the ante. Shadowgaze thought. Hahaha...I'm prepared for everything...
Shadowgaze concentrated on the scar on her forehead, keeping the pleading gaze. She had to make it tense, make it bleed...ha! She felt the fragile scar break, and the blood travel down her forehead. She glazed her eyes with the upcoming look of sickness, and shivered in mock pain. "H-help...me." Shadowgaze murmured before collapsing on the ground. "P-please..." Shadowgaze shut her eyes and shivered again. She was still alert, still testing to see what this other cat would do in the face of a bleeding enemy.
While she had thinking time to kill, Shadowgaze thought of what this other cat had said. Her mind mock imitated him. "AshClan camp, perhaps?" Blergh. That memory gave her a bad feeling in her stomach. Killing her mother, that had been easy. Shadowgaze smiled mentally at that one. All she had to do was set up a trap and lead her in. Game, set, match. Just like she was doing now. Her brother's mentor...not so easy. She knew her brother had been expecting her, and had been forced to remain in the shadows. The Twolegs' trap-thing had done the trick. Cloverpetal was stupid enough to fall for it, but this tom was smarter than both her mother and brother's mentor. But, as this thought came to an end, the thought of her brother returned. Yewfang. Stupid, goody-goody Yewfang. He had thought he was so clever when he figured out Shadowgaze's scheme. Shadowgaze had gotten cocky. She should have drowned him in a river the first time she had the chance. Not fight with him as she had done, receiving this scar, which was helping her now. One thing to thank her brother for. But being buried alive...that was a horror no cat should ever face. Slowly suffocating in the dirt...Shadowgaze banished it from her mind. Push it away...let it decay...never let it come to stay... Shadowgaze repeated the chant in her mind that she had taught herself all those moons ago. Set it free...let it be...banish the evil memory... Over and over again.
The memory was replaced by the current task. Have to pay attention. I know what is going on in my head...

This was Shriekingvoice’s favorite part of the game. Ah, memories. So many times has he heard that plea. So many times was he unable to help… of course when you’re part of the murder, it is kind of hard to help. Nightfoot always told him to hold back and let her finish the work, but when he had killed her off she never once cried for help. His ear twitched at the almost forgotten memory. He remembered seeing that particular look on one of the deputies Nightfoot was ‘doing away with’… what was her name, it was something flowery, Lilacleaf or something of the sort. Her pelt had been covered with battle scars and Nightfoot was by no means finished with the deputy she-cat. Ah SoulClan…
Turning back to the situation at hand, Shriekingvoice studied the She-cat’s expression. Blood was now running from the scar on her forehead and she had the most… he wanted to think ‘laughable’ expression on her face, for it was amusing to him. He had offered her help, or maybe she just liked acting and was practicing on some random cat in this forest, “I did offer you help, my dear.” His voice was just as soft as before. He came down to her level and looked her eye-to-eye, “But I am growing impatient, and as much as I would just love to stay and chat about strategy, I just don’t have the time!” He tilted his head and smiled at her before sitting back up.
Not being able to think of something else to say while he was ahead, Shriekingvoice stretched his powerful limbs and prepared to walk away from this she-cat.

Shadowgaze is messing with your emotions. "Shadowgaze is taunting you." Shadowgaze is plotting. "The mousebrains are blathering."
Shadowgaze sighed. She had clearly thought this cat more gullible than he was in truth. Nothing secretive was going to come up here with her acting. She was getting out of practice; perhaps she'd try again later on a less witted cat. One who got here through brute power rather than cunning and intelligence. But Shadowgaze wasn't about to let this one get away. Not in a million moons. She got up, keeping her eyes shut, and shook the blood from her scar, flicking toward the other cat. Her eyes opened and stared at the cat.
"Tut, tut. Look who thinks they're so clever?" Shadowgaze taunted. "Well, good job. But then again, the last cats I have tried this on had souls. Heh, you wouldn't know about that, would you? Well, one that is as cunning as to ignore your conscience-which I'm assuming you have, however quiet it may be-is a cat that catches my attention." Shadowgaze cackled triumphantly and winked at the cat. "What's your name hon? I want to write you down on my list of people I have tried to mess with. Heh, but with what you've shown me so far, you'd probably ask me mine first. It's Shadowgaze. Can ya see why? I'll give you a hint." Shadowgaze stared intensely into the other cat's eyes, boring into them. She kept her sly smile on, just to avoid confusing herself.
Shadowgaze cackled again, adding a bit more shadows to the laugh's force. This cat wouldn't be too hard to figure out; it just took the right tactics. Shadowgaze flicked her tail in admiration. Her claws were still unsheathed, as a warning if this other cat tried anything funny. She bared her teeth in a fanged version of her previous smile. Another warning. She wasn't good with attacking with either of these death-tools, but this opponent didn't need to know this. Her victory was secure over learning a few secrets of this tom. She questioned herself mentally, checking off invisible items on an invisible list. Am I invading this tom's privacy?

Well that all depends. So far he’s been able to keep his anxieties, fears, and longings out of any cats reach. To him it was a sign of weakness, and he couldn’t show that now, could he? Of course not! This she-cat wasn’t going to get anything out of him… Yet, he supposed. He turned back to the black she-cat when she started to speak again, "Tut, tut. Look who thinks they're so clever," she taunted him, "Well, good job. But then again, the last cats I have tried this on had souls. Heh, you wouldn't know about that, would you?” No cat here has a soul in this wood, unless they are dreaming, “Well, one that is as cunning as to ignore your conscience-which, I'm assuming you have; however quiet it may be, is a cat that catches my attention." Glorious is the day when that happens, I suppose, "What's your name, hon? I want to write you down on my list of people I have tried to mess with.” Really? How interesting… "Heh, but with what you've shown me so far, you'd probably ask me mine first.” Actually I was prepared to give you mine first but okay. “It's Shadowgaze.” I figured it would be a fitting name… “Can ya see why? I'll give you a hint." If Shriekingvoice had been an apprentice, the intense gaze, or stare if you will, would have made him jump out of his skin. We can’t all be perfect, I guess.
“Shadowgaze, I wish this were a pleasure,” Shriekingvoice started, the softness in his voice was gone now and replaced with the normal, whatever that was, “You were truly blessed with looks that could give kits nightmares.” Really that is what most of the cats here did, they just visited kits in dreams and scared the living daylights out of them. Not a very good way to spend your time, honestly. “No need to get ants in your pelt, Shadowgaze,” “Shriekingvoice is what I am called.” He couldn’t remember that his apprentice name had been Rattlepaw, and the only reason for his name change was because his mentor had talked it over with the leader of SoulClan. But that was long ago. “And might I ask what you’re looking for?” He had gotten the hint that Shadowgaze wanted something when she kept talking to him.
How annoying.

Shadowgaze is screwing with your emotions. "Shadowgaze is taunting you." Shadowgaze is plotting. "The mousebrains are blathering."
Shadowgaze cackled again and released her stare's hold on the cat. He looked like he was going to jump ten fox-lengths in the air when she stared at him. Her gaze had this quality, and Shadowgaze had used it countless times, but it was still hilarious. Just looking at the scared look the cat showed-on the inside or in plain view of everyone-slapped a smile onto her face. Her stare gave her a glimpse of what was going on inside this tom's head. She was forced back into reality by a wave of confusion and hidden longing. Longing for what? Shadowgaze pondered, her smile fading. He's already dead and probably has been for a while. What could he possibly want now? There are some strange cats in this forest, that's for sure. Shadowgaze shook her head in a manner similar to scolding a kit for playing too roughly.
"Shadowgaze, I wish this were a pleasure. You were truly blessed with looks that could give kits nightmares." The other cat meowed, the softness evaporating into a distinct coldness and something else Shadowgaze couldn't recognize. Shadowgaze almost fell down laughing at that one. A nightmare-giver. Shadowgaze grinned, baring her fangs. Yes, Shadowgaze liked this. Giving others nightmares. "No need to get ants in your pelt, Shadowgaze." When had I ever had them, O Clever, Assuming, and Confused one? "Shriekingvoice is what I am called."
Shadowgaze's smile widened. Her teeth bared in a grin that might be even scarier than the glare Shadowgaze had been named for. Strangely, Shadowgaze decided that this was the one moment in her life where she would speak before thinking. "Shriekingvoice, eh? Hm." Shadowgaze purred playfully. "You won't mind if I avoid your singing concerts, will you? Ahaha, fear not, Shriekingvoice. I do not wish you harm. If I did, well you wouldn't be here, now would you? Or maybe you would, ha ha. You said earlier that you had little time, yes? I find that hard to believe. Out here, or in here, or what have you, we have all the time in the world! Shadowgaze cackled once more, adding a hint of playfulness to her laugh, replacing the cold tone she had used earlier with it. I should be stopping soon, though. Shadowgaze reminded herself. Now I'm just doing this for fun. Though I haven't laughed like this in many a moon...maybe I'll just play with him a bit more...?
Shadowgaze was just about to let out another hearty cackle, but the next question this Shriekingvoice asked stopped her dead-or whatever she was-in her tracks. "And might I ask what you are looking for?"
|
Ah, the age-old question. What was anyone looking for, if this question was to be asked. This Shriekingvoice had to be the 'questioner.' But really. What was she looking for. The first time she had come, what was she looking for? Entertainment? Answers? A chance to try out her acting again? But now...now that she had been pushed out of her element, to the point of answering questions, to the point where she was no longer leading...now what was she looking for? Shadowgaze took a deep breath, letting her smile fade to a straight face. Shadowgaze let her eyes close, and let her breath slide out into the dark, moonlit air. Shadowgaze looked inside herself. She began sifting through the surface shadows, and it was almost like diving into a black lake. She swam through it, seeking out the bright light at the bottom that signaled the answer. The shadows seemed to choke her, and the body of Shadowgaze that Shriekingvoice was viewing tried to take a deep breath in, but choked on it and held it. The mental Shadowgaze kept swimming through the black lake. She finally got a faint glimpse of the answering light, and her swimming quickened. The light became brighter, and the physical Shadowgaze's heartbeat quickened with it. Finally, and not a moment too soon, the light engulfed Shadowgaze. Her breathing in the physical world steadied, and emerged as cloud-like puff in the slowly cooling air. Shadowgaze fell into the light, and her eyes snapped open as she realized what she was looking for. "What am I looking for, you ask?" Shadowgaze echoed, hinting her mental journey by changing her tone to a more distant and wistful version of itself. "The obvious answer would be secrets. But I have a feeling that you aren't looking for the obvious answer. No, no, no. You're much too intelligent for that. Unless I have lost my touch in figuring cats out...which is possible. But anyway, the true answer to what you are asking." Shadowgaze lost her distant look, since the answer wasn't as distant as before. Her fanged smile returned. "Hope you don't mind if I answer your question with another question. Do you know how long it had been since I saw another cat who didn't unsheathe his claws at me the moment he saw my face? Or tried to attack me before I spoke even a single word? Forever and a moon, my dear Shriekingvoice. Make that two. Maybe, just maybe, I was just looking for someone to talk to. A presence that is either smart or cautious enough; putting you in the smart category, thank me later; to not whip out his death tools whenever another cat comes into the clearing." Shadowgaze's smile dissolved into a misty frown as her words came out. Her thoughts blurred into each other. Individual thoughts collided and merged into dual thoughts, which dissolved into one, original, intense thought. I was looking for a friend. Not an ally, not a secret-teller. Unless I have lost my touch in figuring cats out...which is possible. But anyway, the true answer to what you are asking."Shriekingvoice waited. He had already lost his impatience, but he was willing to listen and see how he could possibly twist this to his advantage, if that was even possible. Maybe this She-cat was the answer to his problems of how to get to StarClan. Of course that was impossible at the moment, but together… perhaps they could cross. Oh how he longed to see his Morningbreeze again! Hope you don't mind if I answer your question with another question. A presence that is either smart or cautious enough; putting you in the smart category, thank me later; to not whip out his death tools whenever another cat comes into the clearing." Well, he would have thought to unsheathe his claws at another cat. He was, indeed, smarter than that. All the long years of living in the real world hadn’t even begun to prepare him for how many cats would grow, sneer, laugh, and try to degrade Shriekingvoice for whatever reason. But he had gotten used to it. And this she-cat would too… maybe… she looked a little iffy.
Shriekingvoice thought for a moment about what he was going to say next. He wouldn’t give away secrets, he would make them up and tell them himself, but he wouldn’t give any away. There were tons of them. Some personal secrets, some secrets that were told to him by others! There was also the threats he had gotten from the many deputies he tried to kill, but that was another story.
Looking at the black she-cat calmly he blinked. I can see you like to think ahead,” Shriekingvoice wasn’t one for just ‘talking’ but if there was something important going on he would stay to listen. But there was nothing he wanted to know about Shadowgaze. At all. In fact he wasn’t sure that she was worth his time to talk to, but he talked anyway. He continued, “That’s a good sign of a young cat. However, I do not see how I can be of any help to you. You seem to have everything under control. Maybe if you go looking around you can find an apprentice to scare off back to StarClan. There are hardly any young apprentices who are sure they want to travel the path of shadows.” That… sounded so cliché to Shriekingvoice. ‘travel the path of shadows’. Well that’s what it was, right? Covered with shadows and hidden in moonlight. Hidden in moonlight… how ridiculous!

Foxdung. She had just told her secrets, and so far hadn't found anything out about this cat except his name! Well...she had called him smart, in her own way. He didn't unsheathe his claws, and hadn't so far. He had been shocked by her 'glare.' She laughed inwardly, still not getting over that. Well...she had spilled her thoughts, and she knew that this cat would probably be courteous enough to reply...which might be why he was taking a slight, but casual, breath in as if preparing to speak.
Or she could just be going crazy...which in this forest, was infinitely possible. But, defying this brief thought of possible insanity, he began. "I can see you like to think ahead,” he meowed with...what was that? Contentedness? Calm? Shadowgaze couldn't tell; maybe she was going crazy... “That’s a good sign of a young cat."
|
Shadowgaze expertly hid her offense at this comment. Young?! He doesn't even know how long I have been in this stinking forest! I could be older than he is! ...Except that in whatever amount of time...I seem to have forgotten...no matter. There's a good chance I should be taking offense at this! Her mind raged on. She quieted it as Shriekingvoice continued. "However, I do not see how I can be of any help to you." Foxdung. "You seem to have everything under control. Maybe if you go looking around you can find an apprentice to scare off back to StarClan. There are hardly any young apprentices who are sure they want to travel the path of shadows.” Rage filled her mind. Deal with filthy apprentices? Not happening until StarClan admits defeat! Shadowgaze hunted and fought for herself and only herself. And plus; 'travel the path of shadows'? The tackiness of that both amused and irritated her, like a mouse stuck to a tree branch too high for her to grasp. She let one of these anger flashes loose in her eyes, but banished the rest to the dark...or at least, dark er corners of her mind. The place where she usually kept 'kindness' and all that happy-go-lucky mouse bile. Shadowgaze searched blindly for a response, and quickly found at least something to start one off. Something that wasn't insulting, but still got her point across. She began with a laugh. "I didn't know you were so good at tacky humor, my dear Shriekingvoice." Shadowgaze meowed, amused and not mocking in the slightest, "But I cannot accept your request to deal with...apprentices." She put scorn on the word 'apprentice.' "They never listen anyway. Always trying to be in the center of attention. And every mentor is supposed to think 'oh, they're just being cute and innocent.' Irritating. And I'm sure if you don't do that, they start being disobedient. Irritating." Shadowgaze shook her head to add to the effect. "Even chasing them off is useless. They try to be brave while sniveling and crying like kits. And if they are brave enough not to do so, they think they're better than you are. And this just becomes infuriating."Shadowgaze's eyes narrowed, and she glanced off into the distance, where she had scented the apprentices. She gave half a 'Shadowgaze glare' to that direction. Not enough to terrify, but enough to make anyone give an inward shudder. Mousebrained warrior-wannabes. They can all go to...well, they were already here, so...they could go somewhere else. Anywhere that isn't within my hearing range. She glanced expectantly at Shriekingvoice, expecting a response. Courtesy could have been inserted there, but it wasn't necessary...right? Who cared, anyway? Shadowgaze was Shadowgaze, and Shadowgaze wasn't courteous. notes;; so very sorry for taking so long! word count;; 630 muse;; 6.5/10 Is death in all of its glory [/blockquote]

And so far, that is all this she-cat had done to him, sarcasm or not. Oh well, we can’t all be perfect, at least she was honest… his remark had been tacky. But he was only trying to use the many names other cats had given this place. But oh how she undermined apprentices. Recently he had taken to talking to apprentice, even though he himself would never have thought to give a bother to them in the first place. He let the corners of his mouth go up a little as she ranted about how ignorant they were, how undeserving they were, and impudent.
When she finished Shriekingvoice chuckled darkly, "Shadowgaze," He started – if his tail wasn’t so short he would have flicked it side to side -, “You truly underestimate apprentices.” He wanted to go on, but he didn’t want to lecture the temper prone she-cat on how you could shape the minds of the young cats while they were still apprentices, she probably wouldn’t have appreciated it.
In speaking of apprentices, he wondered what Seapaw was up to and if he was practicing his battle training.

Shadowgaze is playing with your emotions. "Shadowgaze is taunting you." Shadowgaze is plotting. "The mousebrains are blathering."
Shadowgaze let her anger fade. She couldn't let herself actually go crazy with rage, and she couldn't anger the one cat she had actually had a decent conversation that didn't involve death threats. Her mind calmed, her gaze; she hadn't noticed it had intensified; softened. She didn't have much charisma, that was assured. But maybe she had enough just to talk with another cat. Maybe she had enough to make him say 'Hi, Shadowgaze.' or at least notice her when they were in the same clearing.
His mouth opened and he took a breath in. He spoke. "Shadowgaze. You truly underestimate apprentices." He seemed distant after that comment, as if he had something else to do. Foxdung. Now Shadowgaze was in trouble. To keep him here, she would have to resort to something she never, ever, ever, resorted to. She searched her mind; the deepest, darkest corners of it; for these wickedly, un-Shadowgaze qualities. Kindness? Not really... necessary here. Politeness? Nope...kind of already used that...in an impolite manner... Shadowgaze snickered inwardly. Humor? Ew...gross. There it is. Urgh. Humility.
Shadowgaze hated humility. Hated cats who had it, hated cats who wanted it...it just wasn't 'her'. But, and an unfortunate 'but' this was, she was going to have to use it to keep this conversation going. She paused her thoughts to gather the courage she needed to do this, and began with a laugh. It felt unnatural; it wasn't a cackle, or even a snicker. Just a laugh. As if Shriekingvoice had said something humorous. Which, though Shadowgaze's mind never admitted it, it was. "You're right. I do. But we can't all be perfect, can we?" Shadowgaze purred, covering her mind's uncertainty with another laugh that felt more natural. "You probably held back a long lecture to support that nice bit of humor you had there. Now. You seemed distant when I saw you in that clearing, and you seem distant now. What's on your mind?" She said this in such a casual way that she almost forgot why she had said it. Secrets was still a main goal.
But the tom probably wouldn't take the bait. He had proven his intelligence through seeing through her acting, humor, everything. So that meant he was smart and funny. Did that help her? What Shadowgaze had thought of as her normal mind said no. But her inner mind, bursting out for just a fraction of a second, screamed yes. She shoved it back in and ignored the yes. Still, friendly conversations were always...nice. Back in...actually, she hadn't ever really had one. She had kept to herself when alive, and other cats away from her in death. That had made her...lonely? She couldn't tell anymore.
The tips of her lip curled upward. She was smiling. An honest smile. That's it. I'm crazy. It's off to the Twolegs for me. After all, she owed them for Cloverpetal's death. But she was going to end up here and crazy, whether she wanted to or not. Alone and crazy.
But what if she wasn't crazy? What if...she was happy?

For years he had managed to keep the others of SoulClan from knowing he was the killer of all those deputies. He had lied his way all the way up to kill his own mentor, and then to kill any other deputies after that… all the while falling in love with Morningbreeze, who still resides in StarClan.
"You're right. I do. But we can't all be perfect, can we?” No, and that was the reason a lot of cats were here. Because they wanted power, and they were willing to do anything to get it! That’s how he had died. He had died fighting the deputy on a half-moon. Too bad he didn’t know he had caused trauma in the life of his mate. If he had known that… well, he didn’t want to think about it. “You seemed distant when I saw you in that clearing, and you seem distant now. What's on your mind?" He gave Shadowgaze a sharp glance through narrowed eyes. “I was only thinking of Seapaw. He’s due to become a warrior soon.” .” He said, only giving her half the truth, “He will make a fine addition to AspenClan.” That would be when Shriekingvoice would drop Seapaw to fend for himself. He knew that what Shadowgaze had said earlier was true. Only after they become warriors do they think they’re better than you, though…
